Robert B. Parker on Mastery

"Aside from the pure pleasure of it," I said. "What are we trying to accomplish?"

"Hell," Hawk said, "you ought to know how this works. Start in, poke around, talk to people, ask questions, see what happens? I learned it from you all these years."

"It's known in forensic circles as the Spenser method," I said.

"Also known as the I don't have any idea what the fuck I'm doing," Hawk said.

"Also known as that," I said. "Nice to know you've been paying attention."

"Learning from the master," Hawk said.

Spenser and Hawk figure out what's next.

Conan O'Brien on The Journey

To all the people watching, I can never thank you enough for your kindness to me and I'll think about it for the rest of my life. All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere.

Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen.

It was nice to see a real comedian pick up The Tonight Show where Johnny Carson left off... while it lasted. Thanks, Conan O'Brien.

Conan O'Brien on Achievement

Hosting the Tonight Show has been the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for me. And I just want to say to the kids out there watching: You can do anything you want in life... unless Jay Leno wants to do it, too.

Referencing the retired Jay Leno's efforts to return to an 11:35 p.m. time slot.
